David and I decided to go to San Diego for the weekend. I have a Companion Pass this year and we are trying to take advantage of it. We flew in to San Diego on Saturday and got there about 1:00 p.m. We collected our rental car with very little fanfare and got on our way. Checked in to the 1906 Lodge where we had reservations and then headed to Balboa Park. Balboa is an amazing park which covers acres in the middle of San Diego downtown area. It holds the famous San Diego Zoo as well as 16 different museums. We wandered around the trails encircling the park and grabbed a sandwich at the Cafe at the Park - not too awesome but David was a lot more positive about his food than I was mine. We watched a film about the history of the park that was interesting but not sure how much will stick in my brain. Loved all the plants, trees and shrubs on the trails - some were extremely unusual.

Headed back to the Lodge to rest a bit. Happy Hour at the Lodge was underway and we stopped to grab some snacks. Good thing too. We actually ate vegetables. After a bit of a rest, we headed back downtown to the San Diego Hobart Theater to watch a musical theater production of The Full Monte.
What a lovely play. Equal part comedy and and illustration of important life lessons. Throw in a little of the risque and this is The Full Monte. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Grabbed a slice of pizza at halftime and inhaled it in our 20 minute break. What a weird eating day.

Morning found us eating an amazing breakfast at the Lodge - good thing too. Our two nights here cost $678.00. Good Grief. How could it ever be worth that? But the food was good - some sort of amazing French Toast Bake with toasted coconut and cranberry syrup. Lots of cereals, juices and fresh fruit. I will forgive them for the horrid coffee.

Bellies full we headed to Torrey Pine Park about 30 miles north of San Diego. This park houses the Torrey Pine tree which only grows here and is currently endangered. Stopped and looked at a house for sale and picked up a flyer. It was just a simple house with a price tag of $2,595,000. Mind blowing. In search of something we could call coffee, we stopped at a place called Cafe Moto. The coffee was good and they had an "Coffee Roaster" store that we wandered through.

What a day. Sky was sparkling blue, temperatures in the 60's and the Torrey Pine Park coastline was food for the soul. We walked along the hiking trails which curled around the coast and soaked in the beauty. We then headed back to Balboa Park to try and get into a museum or two - this is my husband's soul food and I go along knowing that it is good for my brain. We made it into the Museum of Natural History and watched a couple of films - Ice Age Mammoths and Ocean Oasis. Great films. Starving once again, we ate at the Flying Squirrel Cafe. Oh boy, our food choices are continuing to be pretty strange. Headed back to the Lodge for a little rest and then back to downtown San Diego for another musical theater show - Dirty Dancing. Our plan was to eat a nice dinner but it didn't work out quite that way. We walked forever and didn't find anything and ended up at Burger IM - an outdoor burger place. The burgers were delicious.

The play was very entertaining but not quite as all around wonderful as The Full Monte - at least for me. Sound was a little too loud for me where we were sitting and I didn't find the play as relevant and poignant. But still tons of fun. We walked the couple miles back to our car after the play, headed home and crawled exhausted into bed.

Morning was quite early. Another amazing breakfast at our expensive lodge and we were on our way to the airport.

Southwest got us home safe and uneventfully to return to our life at home. We had an amazing time together as we always do. How fortunate are we.
